Acharya Shunya is a master teacher of Advaita Vedanta, the non-dual mystical teachings from India, which are the crowning philosophy of the Vedic tradition, one of the most ancient surviving spiritual traditions on the planet today. The Vedic tradition nourished the roots of the world’s oldest religion, Hinduism, and influenced the emergence of Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism in India.
The canonical texts of Advaita, which reveal the precious, profound, and awakening teachings of the enlightened sages of ancient India, include the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras. Acharya Shunya teaches from these exact sacred texts at Vedika Global, the wisdom school and international spiritual community she founded in 2007, which has its world headquarters in northern California. Shunya also leads satsanghas (public discourses), weekend intensives, retreats, and conferences. She is also frequently invited to lecture internationally and is advisor to several spiritual and Vedic organizations worldwide.
Thanks to her unique traditional learning opportunity inside a lineage wisdom school, Shunya was inspired to revive the Vedic system of education, known as "Gurukulam" the hallmark of which is the power to transmit directly, from heart to heart, mind to mind, in the medium of awakening words, from awakening scriptures, something that is beyond words. Her gurukulam disciples have offered Vedic wellness courses under her supervision at UNICEF and Stanford University’s Health Improvement Program, authored bestselling books, teach retreats and workshops, and are certified to provide Ayurveda and Yoga staff trainings at prisons and police departments across California.
Shunya has received prestigious awards in the United States and India, including the Award for Distinguished Service in Vedic Sciences from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and being named amongst the top 100 Ayurveda and Yoga Trailblazers in the U.S. by Spirituality & Health Magazine. She has also received an Award of Excellence by the Association of Ayurveda Professionals of North America.
Acharya Shunya is the author of the bestselling book, Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom (Sounds True, 2017), highlighting the Vedic path of mind, body, soul health and healing, which has been licensed to be translated and printed in five different languages and countries. Ayurveda Lifestyle Wisdom has received critical acclaim in Publisher’s Weekly, and has been featured on National Public Radio (NPR), WBN-TV, TV Asia, leading podcasts like Insights on the Edge by Tami Simon, and over 60 more media outlets, including Bustle, Spirituality & Health Magazine, Yoga Journal, Huffington Post, MindBodyGreen, Elephant Journal, and Thrive Global by Arianna Huffington.
Acharya Shunya has delivered keynote addresses at the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA), California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), University of California – San Francisco and Los Angeles, Stanford University, Sedona Yoga Festival, the International Delegates Assembly (a 60-country consortium of Vedic Sciences). She was also invited to present on the status of “Vedic Sciences, Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedanta in the United States” to the Government of India, a rare honor bestowed upon her in 2016, and then again in 2017.
Acharya Shunya lives with her husband, son, and extended family of spiritual students in Northern California.
